DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

HISTORY: The Department of Chemistry, one of the founder branches of the institution, was established along with the college in the year 1982.As a part of B.Sc ,MPC group, the subject of chemistry was taught  as ancillary  along with Mathematics (another ancillary )  and Physics (main subject). The department of chemistry as followed the syllabi and the examination pattern of the Andhra University to which the institution was affiliated.

As per the guidelines of the Andhra University annual examination system was followed. The subject of Chemistry was taught with three fundamental branches, namely Inorganic chemistry, Organic chemistry and Physical chemistry. These three subjects theory subjects along with relevant practicals were taught during the first, second and third years respectively. The students were not only tested for their theoretical subject knowledge but also for the experimental skills during entire three-year programme.

The college and in turn the department were later bifurcated from the Andhra University and affiliated to the Nagarjuna University from the year 1989-90 till to date. As such the department at present is following the syllabi and the examination pattern of Acharya Nagarjuna University.as described here under:

Semester –I:

Theory paper –I (inorganic, organic chemistry) =75 Marks

Practical paper –I (Semi-micro qualitative analysis) = 50 M

Semester II:

Theory paper-II (physical and general chemistry) = 75Marks

Practical paper –II (qualitative analysis of mixtures) = 50 M

Semester III:

Theory paper –III (inorganic , organic chemistry)   = 75 marks

Practical paper III (qualitative organic analysis and titrimetric analysis) =50 M

Semester IV:

Theory paper-IV – (SPECTROSCOPY & PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY) =   75 M

Practical paper IV –(Physical Chemistry and IR Spectral Analysis )      = 50 M

Semester V:

The assessment of the students in the practical’s includes submission of practical record for the first three papers and project report in the paper four. The total theory marks are 750M and the practical’s marks are 500 leading to a grand total are  marks.

  1. NUMBER OF TEACHING POSTS:

At the time of establishing the department, the subject of chemistry was sanctioned with 4 (Four) teaching posts as per the then syllabi prescribed by Andhra University  and  as per the work load fixed up by the university grants commission and the commissioner of higher education.

In view of the then existing work load 2 (two) posts were sanctioned during the first year of establishing the college (proceeding Rc.No. 37/A3 /82-83 dated 18-05-83) .The department was  later strengthened by sanctioning 2 ( two ) more posts in the year 1984, to accommodate the work load for all the three year students(( proceeding Rc.No. 37/A3 /82-83 dated 25-10-83 ).

All the 4 (four) posts of the department were sanctioned in the state pay scale of Rs. 1050-40-1600. However, the pay scales were later converted to UGC pay scales of 1976 with a pay band of Rs.700-1600.

After getting to affiliated to Acharya Nagarjuna University and with the introduction of modified work load for the degree lecturer prescribed by UGC  and state government , the work load of the department was reduced to 3 (three ) posts.  The excess 4th  post was transferred to the department of computer science in the year 1999 to accommodate the new combination of Maths, Statistics and Computer Sciences in B.Sc (proceeding Rc. No.4954/A2-1/99 dated 2-01-99. The department is continuing with three regular sanctioned posts till to date.

3.MEMBERS OF FACULTY:

The department of chemistry was initiated by sri.M.Kodandram, the then J.L.in chemistry at APR Junior college, Nagarjunasagar. He has rendered his services along with Sri.M.Venkatewarlu, another JL of APRJC,N’Sagar.

However, in the year August,1983 sri. V.Ramakrishna, was brought from the government degree college , Palem on deputation basis. Sri.M.Kodandram was recruited as regular degree college lecturer along with in august,1983 Sri.V.Ramakrishna having a service of around 25 years was made the first in –charge of the department and he has established the laboratory and, equipments on a very firm footing .

In the month of November,1984 two more regular faculty , namely Sri.M.Venkateswarlu,and Dr.G.Seetharama Rao  has joined the department , thereby filling up all the required vacancies. The department under the Head ship of Sri.V.Ramakrishna has contributed immensely for the development of the college. However, Sri.V.Ramakrishna, was repartiated  back to his parent department after complection of his 5 years of his deputation period at this institution . Sri. M.Kodandram took over the in-charge ship and continued the traditions established by Sri.V.Ramakrishna.

Sri. M.Kodandaram has retired from his service after attaining the age of super annuation. in the year 1998 and sri.M.Venkateswarlu took over the in-charge ship of the department. Dr.G.Seetharama Rao has taken up the responsibility of leading the department after sri. M.Venkateswarlu, opted for volunteer retirement in the year 2007-2008

In absence of either new recruited or promotes from JL cadre the department utilized the services of several contract and part-time faculty as listed below.

  1. TEACHING METHODS ADOPTED:

For regular university examinations and competitive examinations: The department always use to have highly experienced and industry teaching staff in guiding students both for theory and practical examinations.  It is practice by convention to teach a particular subject by an individual lecturer at least three consecutive years thereby following the student from first to third class.

Another conventional practice is to have two lecturers in practical class for very effective training in imparting experimental skills. The residential students the rapport between the teacher and taught was very close and personal and individual attention was paid towards each student through the loco parents system.

The students in their first year class itself were  identified for preparing to the competitive examinations for admission into PG courses in various national institutes like IIT’S , central universities and national laboratories.  The students identified with jeal for chemistry trained in competitive chemistry through the separate guidance of senior faculty and from the books  provided by the departmental library. The meritorious students were fine tuned by certain professional organizations in preparing them for national examinations like admission tests to IIT’S, Central Universities and National Institutions. Almost all the national prestigious institutions  like IIT, Chennai; IIT, Bombay; IISC , Bangalore; IIM Dunbhad, BHU, Varanasi; HCU, Hyderabad; PCU, Pondecherry and many more such institutions are having the students of APRDC  for M.Sc programme in chemistry.

The MPC students used to compete in the national level quiz competitions in chemistry conducted by the AC College Guntur and Loyola College, Vijayawada.  The students trained by the department of chemistry have taken FIRST place for four consecutive years.
